I recently lead the discussion on The Handmaid's Tale at the Book Club at Gyaan Adab, Pune. A dystopian tale written by Margaret Atwood in 1985, the book is about a futuristic world that is plagued by social unrest and declining fertility. Women rights are taken away and they are reduced to being 'handmaids' to carry on humankind. Given where we stand with women's issues today, this book seems more relevant today than ever!
What really stood out for me was, the possibilities of how things could turn out if we don't raise our voices when it needs to be heard. If you have an account with Hulu, the new TV series on the book that being aired is highly recommended.
While I want to believe that the book is fiction and will never be reality, I read this article in the New York Times. We have a long way to go.
