Hollywood ended 2017 with the blockbuster Star Wars – The Last Jedi which is on its way to becoming the top grosser of the year. I’m a big fan of the series but what made it particularly interesting for me was the strong female characters in the movie. In the Original Star Wars series, Leia was the token woman character in a galaxy that was largely driven by men (and well….other creatures!). The Last Jedi gives us 4 prominent women warriors - the new galaxy order! Leia commands the Resistance force and taking over from her is her second in command, the very capable lady with lavender tresses - Amilyn Holdo. Rey continues her journey in the series, seeking out the Jedi master in this movie. New to the series is Rose Tico, a bold maintenance worker who teams up with Finn for some great action to save the Resistance Forces. Fine strong women taking lead!
Earlier in the year we say Wonder Woman and Beauty and the Beast do great business at the box office. Both movies are in the top 10 highest earning movies of the year. It’s often said that female led movies don’t make money at the box office and 2017 blew that myth apart.
Back home, Bollywood had a few movies that were women centric but none of them did well at the box office with the exception of Tumhari Sulu and Secret Superstar. But even those didn’t make it to the top 10 earners for the year. Padmavati which had the possibility to change the tide, unfortunately hasn’t yet got released. Hopefully 2018 will do better for women in Hindi cinema with the promise of Deepika’s Padmavati, Sonam and Kareena’s Veere di Shaadi, Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi and Alia’s Raazi amongst others.
Here’s looking forward to the gender envelope being pushed further in cinema in 2018!
